New Smaller Honda Crossover Coming to 2013 Detroit Auto Show

December 11th, 2012

Honda Urban SUV Concept Teaser Photo: 2013 Detroit Auto ShowAt next month’s 2013 Detroit Auto Show, Honda will show an all-new concept previewing a new addition to the brand’s U.S. lineup: a smaller crossover SUV to slot in beneath the compact CR-V in size and price.

Called only the “Urban SUV Concept” for now, Honda’s latest will be built atop the platform underpinning the next-generation Fit subcompact, which is set to go on sale for the 2014 model year. Such “micro-crossovers,” like the new 2013 Buick Encore and upcoming Mazda CX-3, provide drivers with a high seating position, good efficiency and decent cargo capacity while maintaining length and width more along the lines of the Fit and other subcompacts.

The final production version will likely wear the Fit badge with some suffix. Today, Honda sells a car along these lines in other world markets called the Fit Shuttle. The next-gen Fit lineup will also expand to include a sedan, as Honda makes a push to sell 200,000 Fit-based subcompacts in the U.S. annually going forward.

Los Angeles Auto Show Debuts

October 15th, 2012

2012 Los Angeles Auto Show Logo

The 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show (Nov. 30 to Dec. 9 at the Los Angeles Convention Center) will feature at least 20 world debuts for all-new vehicles, along with plenty of North American debuts and concept cars. As the first major show of the annual auto show season, LA is of huge importance to build buzz for the upcoming 2014 model year. It’s also located right in our backyard, and we’ll once again be bringing you live coverage from the show. Until then, here’s the world debuts we’ve confirmed, with plenty more to follow.

2014 Kia Forte

Los Angeles Auto Show 2014 Kia Forte

While the Hyundai Elantra has racked up awards and fans worldwide, the Kia Forte is currently based on an older platform without the Elantra’s sky-high mpg rating. We’ll see an all-new Forte in LA, and it should prove just as competitive as the Optima and Rio are now in their respective segments.

2014 Kia Sorento

Los Angeles Auto Show 2014 Kia Sorento

The Kia Sorento will debut with reworked styling along with a “re-engineered body shell and new chassis,” Kia says. The car you see here is the production model, though final specs, mpg ratings and the like have not yet been confirmed. Hyundai/Kia have focused their efforts on passenger cars in recent years, but now commit their efforts to modernizing their crossover lineups.

2013 Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

Los Angeles Auto Show 2013 VW Beetle Convertible

The Beetle drops its top for the upcoming year, with a new soft-topped convertible model that should recall the classic Karmann-built VW ragtops of old. The newest addition to the Beetle lineup will reportedly come in several “heritage” editions to celebrate each decade of the original Beetle’s run.

2013 Porsche Cayman

Los Angeles Auto Show 2013 Porsche Cayman

Hot on the heels of the new-generation Porsche Boxster, the mid-engined Cayman hardtop with which it shares a platform will be totally redesigned to debut in late 2012 or early 2013. We expect the same 2.7-liter and 3.4-liter flat-six engines as the new Boxster, with even sharper handling than the current Cayman. Our favorite $50k true sports car should be better than ever.

2014 Jaguar XFR-S

Los Angeles Auto Show Jaguar XFR-S

The Jaguar XFR-S will become the highest-performing cat in the midsize Jag stable, using a new variant on the brand’s supercharged 5.0-liter V8 tuned to make around 550 horsepower. The XFR-S is the British answer to the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, and has a muscular yet classy character all its own.

2014 Acura RLX

Los Angeles Auto Show 2014 Acura RLX

After debuting in concept form on the auto show circuit earlier this year, the RLX will reportedly bow in Los Angeles in its final production guise. Acura’s new advanced sport hybrid system, which uses an electric motor and gasoline engine to power the front wheels supplemented by two more electric motors powering the rears, should provide around 30 combined mpg plus spirited performance. As is Honda’s custom, the production version should closely resemble the RLX Concept you see here.

2014 Fiat 500E

Los Angeles Auto Show Fiat 500E

An all-new Fiat world debut has been confirmed for the show, widely believed to be the all-electric version of the company’s cutesy 500 subcompact. Called the 500E, the EV will follow in the footsteps of the Honda Fit EV by starting with an extremely lightweight platform for ample range and efficiency.

The 2012 LA Auto Show will also feature confirmed world debuts from Bentley, BMW, Chevrolet, Ford, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota, two from Hyundai, a pair of Mercedes-Benz cars and another unknown Volkswagen. Check back for more coverage to follow, as well as live blogging from the show beginning November 28.
