Tesla Planning an All-New Successor to the Roadster

Tesla Motors is working on an electric sports car successor to the groundbreaking Tesla Roadster, CEO Elon Musk told Autocar. The Roadster ended production in August after just 3 1/2 years on the market, during which time Tesla sold more than 1,800 units. The $111,000 all-electric sports car’s range of around 244 miles puts most EVs to shame.
The next Roadster, set to launch in late 2014, will be built on a modified version of the platform underpinning the company’s new Model S luxury sedan. The current Roadster uses a platform developed on loan from Lotus. The California-based EV pioneers also plan to offer Model S-derived crossover and convertible models as well as an all-electric BMW 3-Series competitor in the next 4 to 5 years.
