2012 Toyota Yaris: First DriveOctober 24th, 2011 by Armaan Almeida
The 2012 Yaris is making its debut, bringing a fresh take on the competitive subcompact segment from Toyota. Available in 3- and 5-door hatchbacks, the model carries over its 1.5-liter 4-cylinder but sees upgrades in many other departments. Fuel efficiency climbs as high as 30 city/38 highway mpg.
Motor Trend recently drove the top-of-the-line Yaris SE, with its upgraded wider 16-inch alloy wheels, firmer suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and sportier interior. 0-60 test results were particularly surprising: at 9.2 seconds, the new 2012 car is nearly a second quicker than its predecessor. The car handles itself well under spirited driving, though testers did note the SE was much more engaging than the lower trim levels without all those enhancements.
The 2012 Yaris starts at $14,115 for the 3-door and $15,140 for the 5-door. The SE starts at $16,400 and is only available as a 5-door. All prices are before a $760 destination charge.
