The question of whether or not you’re content with your current portable media player or smart phone, progress just keeps marching forward, constantly rendering last month’s model obsolete. Same goes for cars. Just as we were getting used to Ford’s highly-praised SYNC in-car connectivity system, they released their latest technological wonder: MyFord Touch.
The new system will debut on the new 2011 Ford Edge, and runs on the second generation SYNC platform developed by Microsoft. Like its predecessor, MyFord Touch is fully capable of connecting Bluetooth, interfacing with Microsoft Zune products and integrating voice commands. Unlike the first generation system, which responded to only 100 voice commands, MyFord Touch recognizes roughly 10,000 different commands. While we never personally had a problem with SYNC’s voice command system, you have to admit that the new one is vastly improved.

Three LCD screens make up the MyFord Touch display, including two small screens to the left and right of the speedometer in the gauge cluster and one 8-inch touch screen located in the center console. Using the center display grants you access to all the system’s infotainment capabilities, which include navigation, Zune interface controls and available apps like Pandora streaming radio.
But without a doubt, the coolest function of MyFord Touch is that the navigation system has a handy Eco-Route option that allows you to find the most fuel-efficient way to get to your destination, in addition to the fastest and shortest routes. So while you may not need all the newest bells and whistles, the MyFord Touch system makes it hard not to want them.
